What's an HB pencil?

Hello,

I cut out my background squares tonight and am ready to trace. The directions say to use a tan marker or an HB pencil. Well, I don't have a tan marker, but what's an HB pencil? If I don't have one, I'll just use a plain ordinary pencil. Is there any reason that would be a bad idea? Won't do any thing until tomorrow anyway. It's almost midnight here and I think it will go better with daylight.

I admit that I always trace my pattern using the same color Pigma pen as my floss. For this one, I have a dark red one. My stitches cover the ink and sometimes it helps fill in the rough edges.

HB's are ordinary pencil. A 2b pencil would be better on fabric as it's a softer lead. i stoped using pencils & use an artline marker. It washes out real easy. Use that rather than a pigma pen as i can wash mistakes out with the artline which you can't with a pigma or pencil. Jeanette

I just use an ordinary pencil, although I have had problems with the lines wearing off if it's a large stitchery, so I will also use a Pigma pen, same as Elisa does.

Here in Austria HB means the hardness. I'm using 1HB pencils, because they are softer, so its easier to trace the pattern and you don't see the lines after stitching.

Hello stitching friends,
I use a blue pen whose ink washes away...I usually take the finished stitchery to the sink rinse the ink off, blot with towels, let dry then iron..works for me.

I usually use the blue wash out marker. I do have a purple one which apparently disappears after a couple of weeks.
